Yes—you absolutely can get the same STD more than once. Just because you’ve been treated for an STD doesn’t mean you’re immune to it. In fact, reinfection is fairly common, especially if you or your partner don’t get treated at the same time or continue having unprotected sex.

At Miami Beach Urgent Care, we often see repeat cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and other STDs—sometimes just weeks or months apart. The good news? With proper treatment, honest conversations, and smart protection strategies, reinfection is preventable.

Why Reinfection Happens

STDs are infections—not vaccines. That means once your body clears the infection (usually with antibiotics or antivirals), you’re not protected from catching it again in the future.

Here’s how reinfection usually happens:

  • Your partner wasn’t treated: If your partner still carries the infection, you can get it right back.
  • You didn’t wait to resume sex: Most doctors recommend waiting 7–10 days after treatment before having sex again.
  • You didn’t use protection: Unprotected sex, even once, can lead to reinfection.
  • You have multiple partners: The more partners you have, the higher your risk—especially if you don’t get tested regularly.

Which STDs Can You Get More Than Once?

Almost all STDs can be contracted again, including:

  • Chlamydia – Very common to get reinfected, even after treatment.
  • Gonorrhea – No immunity after treatment; repeat infections are on the rise.
  • Syphilis – Once cured, you can get it again from another infected partner.
  • Trichomoniasis – A single round of antibiotics may cure it, but reinfection is common if partners aren’t treated too.
  • Herpes (HSV) – You don’t “get it again,” but you can have multiple outbreaks or transmit it when asymptomatic.
  • HIV – You can’t be reinfected in the same way, but risky behaviors can expose you to other strains or co-infections.
  • HPV – There are many different strains, so you can get a different type even if your immune system cleared a prior one.

How to Prevent Getting an STD Again

At Miami Beach Urgent Care, we focus not just on treatment—but also on education and prevention. Here’s how to avoid getting reinfected:

1. Get Treated at the Same Time as Your Partner

Ask your partner to get tested and treated too. We offer partner testing and treatment to make this easier.

2. Wait Before Having Sex Again

Most STDs require you to wait at least 7 days after treatment before resuming sexual activity. This helps ensure the infection is gone—and prevents you from spreading it.

3. Use Condoms or Dental Dams

Barrier protection greatly reduces the risk of many STDs, especially when used consistently and correctly.

4. Get Retested

The CDC recommends retesting for chlamydia and gonorrhea three months after treatment—even if you have no symptoms. We can schedule this in advance or send a reminder.

What If You’re Not Sure?

If you’re experiencing symptoms again—or had unprotected sex after treatment—it’s smart to get retested. You don’t need to wait for symptoms. Many STDs are silent but still contagious.

We make it easy to check your status discreetly and quickly at Miami Beach Urgent Care. No judgment. No hassle. Just answers and support.
