Pink Eye, Rashes, and Strep: When to Come In

If you're a parent in Miami, you’ve probably had one of these moments: It can be hard to tell what’s urgent — and whether to wait it out or get medical help. At Miami Beach …

If you’re a parent in Miami, you’ve probably had one of these moments:

  • Your child wakes up with red, goopy eyes.
  • A mystery rash spreads across their skin.
  • They suddenly refuse to eat or drink, complaining of a sore throat.

It can be hard to tell what’s urgent — and whether to wait it out or get medical help.

At Miami Beach Urgent Care Walk-In Clinic (MBUC), we see these symptoms every day — and we’re here to help you know when it’s time to come in.

Let’s break it down.

👁️ Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)

What it is:
Pink eye is an inflammation of the conjunctiva — the clear tissue covering the white part of the eye. It can be viral, bacterial, or allergic.

When to come in:

  • If there’s yellow or green discharge
  • If one or both eyes are stuck shut
  • If your child has eye pain, blurred vision, or light sensitivity
  • If it’s spreading to other family members or classmates
  • If symptoms aren’t improving within 24–48 hours

Why it matters:
Bacterial pink eye needs prescription drops. And viral pink eye can mimic more serious infections. Don’t risk it — especially if your child attends daycare or school.

🔴 Rashes: Harmless or Serious?

Rashes are super common in kids — but not all rashes are created equal.

Common causes we treat:

  • Viral rashes
  • Allergic reactions
  • Eczema flare-ups
  • Hand, foot, and mouth disease
  • Contact dermatitis (from plants, soaps, etc.)
  • Heat rash

When to come in:

  • If the rash is widespread or spreading quickly
  • If it’s itchy, painful, or blistering
  • If it’s accompanied by fever or swelling
  • If your child seems unusually tired or irritable
  • If you suspect an allergic reaction or infection

We can evaluate the rash, provide treatment, and — if needed — refer for further care.

🤒 Strep Throat: More Than Just a Sore Throat

Not all sore throats are strep, but strep can spread quickly through schools and families if untreated.

Strep symptoms include:

  • Sudden sore throat with no cough
  • Fever over 101°F
  • Swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches
  • Pain when swallowing
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck

When to come in:

If your child has multiple strep symptoms, come in for a rapid strep test. Results are ready in minutes, and if positive, we’ll start antibiotics right away.

Why it matters:
Untreated strep can lead to complications like scarlet fever or rheumatic fever. Early treatment is key.
