Red eyes are common and often caused by irritation, allergies, or fatigue. However, redness accompanied by other symptoms may indicate an eye infection that needs prompt attention. Recognizing when eye redness is more than just irritation helps protect your vision and prevent complications.

Common Causes of Eye Infection

  • Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Viral conjunctivitis
  • Stye or eyelid infection
  • Keratitis (corneal infection)
  • Eye injury leading to infection

Signs That Eye Redness May Be an Infection

Look for these symptoms along with redness:

  • Persistent or worsening redness
  • Eye pain or discomfort that doesn’t improve
  • Thick, yellow, green, or white discharge
  • Crusting of eyelids or lashes, especially after sleep
  • Swelling of eyelids or surrounding tissue
  • Blurred vision or sensitivity to light
  • Itching with irritation that worsens
  • Feeling of a foreign body or grit in the eye
  • Fever or other signs of systemic illness

Home Care for Mild Eye Infections

  • Practice good hand hygiene—wash hands frequently
  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
  • Use a clean, warm compress on closed eyelids to ease discomfort
  • Avoid contact lenses until infection clears
  • Use over-the-counter lubricating eye drops (avoid redness-reducing drops)
  • Keep your bedding and towels clean and avoid sharing them

When to Seek Urgent Care

Get medical evaluation promptly if you experience:

  • Severe eye pain or worsening symptoms
  • Vision changes such as blurriness or loss of sight
  • Intense light sensitivity
  • Thick discharge with eyelid swelling
  • Symptoms lasting more than a few days or worsening despite home care
  • Eye injury combined with redness

Prompt treatment can prevent complications and protect your eyesight.

If symptoms get worse or don’t improve, visit your local urgent care provider for professional evaluation.
