Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, causes redness, irritation, and discharge from the eye. While it’s often mild and resolves on its own, proper home care can reduce discomfort and prevent spreading the infection. Here’s what you can do safely at home and when to get medical help.
What Causes Mild Pink Eye?
- Viral infections (most common and contagious)
- Bacterial infections
- Allergies or irritants like smoke or pollen
Home Remedies to Ease Pink Eye Symptoms
1. Practice Good Hygiene
- Wash your hands often, especially before and after touching your eyes
- Avoid sharing towels, pillowcases, or makeup
- Use clean tissues to wipe discharge and discard immediately
2. Use Warm Compresses
- Apply a warm, damp cloth over closed eyes for 5–10 minutes several times daily
- Helps soothe irritation and loosen crusting
3. Avoid Contact Lenses and Eye Makeup
- Stop using contact lenses until the eye clears completely
- Avoid makeup to prevent further irritation
4. Lubricate Your Eyes
- Use over-the-counter artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to ease dryness and discomfort
- Avoid redness-relieving drops which can worsen symptoms
5. Keep Your Environment Clean
- Minimize exposure to smoke, dust, or allergens
- Use air purifiers if needed
When to See a Doctor or Urgent Care
Seek professional care if:
- Symptoms worsen or don’t improve after 3–5 days
- Severe eye pain or sensitivity to light develops
- Vision becomes blurry or impaired
- Thick, colored discharge persists or increases
- Swelling of the eyelids or face occurs
- You have a weakened immune system or other health concerns
A doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops if bacteria cause the infection.
If symptoms get worse or don’t improve, visit your local urgent care provider for professional evaluation.
