Alcohol is a common part of nightlife, especially here in Miami Beach — but there’s a line between “buzzed” and dangerously intoxicated. When that line gets crossed, it becomes a serious medical emergency.

🚨 What Is Alcohol Intoxication?

Alcohol intoxication, also known as alcohol poisoning, occurs when there is so much alcohol in the bloodstream that it begins to shut down vital areas of the brain. This includes the parts that control breathing, heart rate, body temperature, and consciousness.

Left untreated, alcohol poisoning can lead to:

  • Choking on vomit
  • Irregular or stopped breathing
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness
  • Permanent brain damage
  • Death

⚠️ Warning Signs of Alcohol Poisoning

If you or someone around you shows any of these symptoms, seek emergency medical help immediately:

  • Unresponsive or passed out and cannot be awakened
  • Slow or irregular breathing (fewer than 8 breaths per minute)
  • Vomiting while unconscious
  • Seizures
  • Cold, clammy, or bluish skin
  • Extreme confusion or slurred speech

Do NOT “sleep it off.” This myth can be fatal.

✅ What To Do in an Emergency

  1. Call 911 immediately – time is critical.
  2. Stay with the person – never leave them alone.
  3. Keep them on their side – this helps prevent choking.
  4. Do not give food, coffee, or let them “walk it off.” These will not help and may make it worse.
