Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes red, itchy, dry, and inflamed patches. Flare-ups can happen unexpectedly, triggered by everything from weather changes to stress or irritating products. While prescription medications can help manage severe cases, many mild to moderate eczema flares can be treated at home with the right care.

Understanding what works—and what doesn’t—can make a big difference in your comfort and skin health. Here are trusted remedies and strategies to soothe flare-ups and support your skin’s healing.

Identify and Avoid Triggers

One of the most important steps in managing eczema is learning what causes your flare-ups. Common triggers include:

  • Fragranced soaps, shampoos, or detergents
  • Stress and lack of sleep
  • Cold, dry weather
  • Overheating and sweating
  • Certain fabrics, like wool or synthetics
  • Dust mites, pollen, or pet dander
  • Harsh exfoliants or frequent hot showers

Try keeping a symptom journal to help you identify patterns. Once you know your triggers, avoiding them can prevent future flare-ups.

Soothe with Moisture—And Do It Often

Dryness makes eczema worse. Moisturizing frequently is one of the simplest and most effective home treatments.

  • Use thick, fragrance-free moisturizers like ointments, creams, or petroleum jelly.
  • Apply immediately after bathing (within 3 minutes) to lock in moisture.
  • Reapply multiple times daily, especially after washing hands or being outdoors.

Some people find relief using natural oils like coconut oil, which has antibacterial properties and can soften the skin. Be sure to test it on a small patch first.

Take Short, Lukewarm Showers

Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils and can worsen eczema. Stick to:

  • Lukewarm water
  • Gentle, fragrance-free cleansers
  • Showers limited to 5–10 minutes

Pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing, then moisturize immediately.

Use Cool Compresses for Itch and Inflammation

If a patch of skin feels especially irritated, a cool, damp cloth can provide instant relief.

  • Soak a clean washcloth in cool water
  • Apply it to the affected area for 10–15 minutes
  • Moisturize the skin afterward to prevent dryness

This method is especially helpful for calming itchy or inflamed spots without scratching.

Try an Oatmeal Bath

Colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oats) has anti-inflammatory properties and is commonly used to soothe irritated or inflamed skin.

  • Add 1 cup of colloidal oatmeal to a lukewarm bath
  • Soak for 10–15 minutes
  • Gently pat skin dry and moisturize immediately

Avoid bubble baths, scented oils, or bath bombs, which can worsen symptoms.

Watch What You Wear

Clothing can either soothe or irritate eczema-prone skin.

  • Choose soft, breathable fabrics like cotton
  • Avoid wool, rough synthetics, or tight clothing
  • Wash new clothes before wearing to remove chemical finishes
  • Use fragrance-free, dye-free laundry detergent

Reduce Stress to Prevent Future Flare-Ups

Stress is a known eczema trigger. Simple calming techniques can reduce flare frequency and intensity:

  • Deep breathing or meditation
  • Gentle yoga or stretching
  • Prioritizing rest and regular sleep
  • Talking to a therapist or counselor if stress feels unmanageable

When to Seek Medical Help

Even with consistent home care, eczema can sometimes worsen or become infected. Seek urgent care or consult a provider if:

  • The skin becomes swollen, painful, or oozes pus
  • You develop a fever or chills
  • Over-the-counter treatments don’t improve symptoms within a few days
  • You experience severe itching that interrupts sleep or daily life

Prompt treatment can prevent complications and restore comfort faster.

If symptoms get worse or don’t improve, visit your local urgent care provider for professional evaluation.
